Erick Machuka shares his inspiring journey as he speaks at the OFY Class of 2023 graduation, celebrating growth and the power of second chances.
Erick Machuka’s story is a powerful example of how a supportive educational environment can help students overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Growing up, Erick faced instability at home and at school. “As a child, I would be moving house to house, going from school to school. I didn’t always have food at home or even a place to stay,” he shared. Despite his best efforts, his living situation and lack of guidance made it difficult for him to focus on his education.
Applying to a college or university is a long process with many steps. When you finally click the “submit” button, you may feel like your work is done and now you can finally devote your time to catching up on your favorite TV shows. While it’s definitely true that you’ll have more free time, you will need to periodically check in to make sure that every part of the application process is flowing the way it should. After all, it is your application and your life! Who better to take care of it than you? To make sure that everything goes well, be sure to avoid these common setbacks.
So you’ve submitted college applications, sent letters of recommendations, and taken your SAT and ACT tests. You’ve done all you can to convince the schools of your choice that you belong on their campuses. What now?
There will be a lot of required reading…and it is REQUIRED. In high school, when your teacher assigned reading you may have thought that meant you didn’t have homework. Reading the assigned material in college allows you to effectively participate in class, often a large contribution to your final grade, and helps you better understand the information professor lectures about in class. Last but not least, you are paying to enroll in your classes, so don’t waste your (parent’s) money!
