What's the Hype about OFY? Spoiler Alert: Yes we're a real school!

Clearing Up Questions & Misconceptions About Our School Model

When people first hear about Options For Youth (OFY), they often ask: “Is it a real school?” “Is it only for students who are behind?” “How is it different from regular high school?”

We get it—alternative education can feel unfamiliar at first. That’s why we’re here to break down what makes OFY unique, who we serve, and why so many students and families say it changed their lives.

First Things First: Yes, It’s a Real School

OFY is not a real school

Not true! OFY is a tuition-free, accredited public charter school serving students in grades 9–12 (up to age 21). Accredited means we are officially recognized by the state and meet academic requirements. We offer the same diploma you’d earn at any traditional high school. This means these credits also recognized by state colleges and universities (some of our students get accepted to attend 4-year universities like UCs, CalState Universities, and more!)

We are proud to be fully accredited by Cognia, a globally recognized organization that ensures high standards in education across more than 85 countries. This means our programs meet rigorous academic requirements and are part of a global network of schools committed to continuous improvement.

We’re also accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for grades 7–12, and our curriculum meets California state graduation requirements and Common Core standards.

For student-athletes, OFY is NCAA-approved, which means student-athletes can stay on track for graduation and remain eligible for college sports programs and scholarships.

In short: Yes, OFY is a real school—accredited, respected, and built to help students succeed.

Common Misconceptions About OFY

We believe in the power of clear communication and want to set the facts straight. Here are some common misconceptions and myths, and we’re highlighting the facts as well as sharing what really makes OFY different—so you can make an informed decision that works for you or your student.

OFY is only for students who are failing.

Not true! While many of our students are looking to catch up on credits, OFY also serves students who are ahead and want to graduate early, students who work or care for family, or those who just need a quieter, more supportive environment to thrive.

OFY is just an online school.

Sort of! OFY offers a flexible blend of independent, self-paced learning and in-person support from teachers who know students by name. While we encourage in-person learning for the added connection and support, we also understand that every student learns differently. That’s why OFY also offers a 100% online option for students who prefer to work fully remote.

You don’t get a high school diploma

Not true! You absolutely do get an accredited, real high school diploma. OFY is an accredited public charter school recognized by the California Department of Education. When you complete the program, you earn a real high school diploma—just like you would at a traditional public school.

You don’t get to use the credits for college

Yes, you can get credits for college at OFY. All courses at OFY are WASC-accredited, which means your credits are recognized by colleges, universities, and trade schools across California and beyond. Many of our students have submitted their transcripts to colleges and received acceptances from UCs and CalStates, and beyond!

It costs money to go to this school

Not at all! OFY is 100% tuition-free—with no enrollment fees, no hidden costs, and no charges for textbooks. As a public charter school funded by the state, everything is covered.

Yes, even field trips! That means your experiential learning trips are also completely free.

OFY is a home school where students pick up packets and do their work at home

No, that’s a common misconception. While OFY offers flexibility, it’s not a homeschool. Students get personalized instruction, access to real teachers, and the option to learn in-person, online, or both—depending on what works best for them.

So… What Is the Hype About OFY?

At OFY, we’re redefining what high school can look like—we’re the trusted alternative educational choice by thousands of families across the state and serving California for over 35 years.

We know there are a lot of myths out there—but here’s the truth: OFY is a fully accredited, tuition-free public charter school that offers real high school diplomas and college-recognized credits. We’re not a homeschool or just an online school. We offer flexible learning options, in-person support, and real teachers who care.

Whether you’re a student looking to catch up, get ahead, or just need a different kind of learning environment, OFY is here to help you succeed.
