Sara’s Journey: How Options For Youth Helped Her Overcome Adversity and Graduate Early
Looking for a safe, supportive, and flexible high school environment? Sara’s story shows how Options For Youth (OFY) empowers students to overcome challenges, reach their full potential, and succeed academically—no matter their past experiences.
Facing Challenges Early On
Sara, originally from Colombia, attended three different schools—Blair, Eliot, and Pasadena High School—before enrolling at OFY in 2019. She faced significant challenges growing up, including bullying and language barriers:
“People have asked me why I chose to attend an independent studies online school and it was mostly because I was a victim of bullying; I was punched in the head by a girl when I was in 8th grade, and the girl was double my size, so I didn’t stand a chance. Because I didn’t speak English at the time, I couldn’t defend myself or even tell her I didn’t want to fight.”
After a brief time at Pasadena High School, Sara realized she needed a school that could provide flexibility, support, and a safe environment.
“So, after I was promoted from 8th grade and went to PHS, I stayed there for six wonderful and exciting months, but I chose to enroll in OFY in 2019 because I wanted something different, and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
Finding Support and Motivation at OFY
At OFY, Sara initially struggled with motivation, doing only the bare minimum in her coursework. Her family and staff at OFY helped her aim higher:
“One day, my grandma who was visiting from Colombia, said, ‘If you have an egg, why don’t you try to get a chicken? And if you have a chicken, take a chance and go get a cow.’ She knew that I was capable of doing more than the minimum, and here is where OFY’s support came in handy. Amy, my teacher, and Lindsay, my sub, always said things to me that constantly pushed me to complete my homework. Allison inspired me to enroll in Dual Enrollment and to accomplish more than the bare minimum in order to graduate a year early.”
Through OFY’s guidance and her own determination, Sara was able to achieve academic excellence and personal growth.
“I didn’t simply grab a chicken or a cow; I grabbed both of them. My overall experience at OFY was fantastic; I had to work weekends and even vacations, but it was all worth it because now I’m here.”
Graduating Early and Looking Ahead
Sara graduated a year early at the age of 17, while also attending Pasadena City College (PCC). With support from OFY staff, she applied to and was accepted at all of the universities she wanted to attend.
“I overcame the obstacles and gave my best. However, I want to stay close to home, so I will be attending Pasadena City College to study Business Management.”
Sara emphasizes the importance of talking to teachers and counselors for support:
“I realized that we sometimes need to talk to our teachers and counselors in order to seek support; without them, we wouldn’t be able to show and perform our best.”
Giving Back and Inspiring Others
Today, Sara has come full circle—she now works as a Center Coordinator at one of the OFY schools, helping other students navigate their educational journey.
“A cycle has now come to an end, and a new door has opened. College will be different from high school, but we have so much support from the community and staff at our colleges that no matter how hard the work is, we will succeed if we rely on the resources we have."
