Eva Turner – From Overlooked to Unstoppable

Eva Turner’s story exemplifies the supportive, empowering environment that Options For Youth (OFY) provides for students facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Eva’s high school experience started off rocky. Her freshman year was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving her without the typical high school introduction she had hoped for. Prior to OFY, Eva attended a predominantly white school where she faced bullying and racism, and struggled to find a community where she belonged. “It was really hard for me to fit in,” she recalls. More than that, Eva struggled to find her own identity and purpose, often asking herself, “Who am I?”

Everything changed when Eva took a trip to Chicago and discovered DePaul University. This became her goal, but when she shared it with her former counselor, she was discouraged: “Let's find something more your level” and “It's not very likely you will get in.”

At OFY, Eva found the encouragement and resources she needed to succeed. “When I told my new counselor about my dream, I was expecting the same reaction as the old one. But I was wrong. He completely supported my goal and started helping me with research and scholarships.” She joined OFY’s CREW program, which supports first-generation college-bound students through the complex application process.

With the unwavering support of OFY, Eva dedicated herself to building a strong college application through “hours and hours of community service, being a part of clubs, and sports.” OFY and Pathways made sure Eva never felt alone during her journey, providing consistent guidance and encouragement.

Today, Eva proudly declares, “My old counselor was wrong.” This fall, she will attend DePaul University, majoring in philosophy with plans to pursue law school.

Instead of giving up, Eva transformed that doubt into motivation. “I mean who doesn’t love a good underdog story,” she says.

Eva’s journey highlights what makes Options For Youth a special place: a community that believes in every student’s potential, provides personalized support, and helps students turn their dreams into reality. "They made sure that I didn't feel alone like I had all the other years of high school," she adds.
