Counselor Corner: Support for Every Step, Every Learning Style

Let’s be honest: high school isn’t one-size-fits-all. Not every student learns the same way, and not every path to graduation is a straight line. That’s something we understand deeply at Options For Youth (OFY)—and why our counselors do so much more than just check boxes.

Every student is assigned a dedicated counselor who gets to know their story, their strengths, and their goals. Whether it’s helping students stay on track with credits or offering a listening ear when life feels overwhelming, our counselors are trusted partners in the journey to a diploma.

Support That Adapts to You

Our students learn in different ways, and we believe support should reflect that. OFY counselors are trained to work with students of all learning styles—including English Language Learners, students with IEPs, and those who thrive in nontraditional environments.

Walk into any OFY center, and chances are, you’ll see a counselor sitting with a student—talking through credits, mapping out college goals, or just being a calm presence on a tough day.

“Each of the staff members went above and beyond to help me with whatever I needed. Whether that was encouragement from my IS (Independent Study) teacher, Natalee and counselor Lindsey, Tutoring from Nichole and Darian, goal setting and finding career opportunities with Jay, Every single staff member was there for me.”
Linda, OFY Alum Class of ’23

Some students need help building confidence in the classroom. Others need flexibility to balance school with work or family responsibilities. Our counselors work with teachers to build personalized learning plans, accommodate unique needs, and ensure students feel seen, supported, and successful.

More Than Just Academics

Our counselors don’t just ask “How are your grades?”—they ask “How are you?” Social‑emotional health is a big part of student success, and OFY counselors provide a safe, judgment‑free space for students to open up about what they’re going through. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, or challenges at home, our counselors are here to help students build resilience and feel empowered.

Counselor’s Corner:

“What inspires me is the students and the difference that we make every day–seeing them strive with whatever we help them with.”  —Serena L, OFY Center Coordinator

“I love being a PSC (Post Secondary Counselor)  because, as a first-generation student, I understand the challenges my students face, and I am passionate about equipping them—especially first-gen and BIPOC students —with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to achieve their academic, social, and career goals, empowering them to become confident, lifelong learners.” — Allison A, OFY Counselor

They also connect students with outside resources—mental health services, community programs, college and career pathways—so they’re never walking alone.

Every student at OFY has potential, and our counselors are here to help uncover it. Whether students are aiming to graduate early, explore a career pathway, or prepare for college, our counselors provide guidance that’s relevant and realistic. They help students apply for college, write resumes, explore career certifications, and develop life skills that last well beyond high school.

“When I told my [OFY] counselor about my dream I was expecting the same reaction as the old one. But I was wrong. He completely supported my goal and started helping me with research and scholarships to achieve my goal.”
Eva T., OFY Alum Class of ‘24

You’re Never Just a Number

Students at OFY are seen for who they truly are—not just by their grades or challenges, but by their growth, resilience, and goals. Our counselors stand firmly behind them, offering the kind of encouragement and guidance that turns potential into progress and hope into achievement.
