Every student's journey looks different. For Mya Rivers, finding the right educational environment made all the difference.

Like many students, Mya realized that a traditional school setting wasn't helping her thrive. She needed a learning environment that offered flexibility while still providing the structure and support to help her succeed. That search eventually led her to Options For Youth (OFY) San Bernardino—a decision that not only changed her educational experience but also helped shape her future.

"Public school wasn't giving me the structure or pace that worked best for me, so OFY gave me the opportunity to take more control of my education," Mya shared.

At OFY, Mya found more than a different way to learn. She found teachers who believed in her and encouraged her to grow both academically and personally.

Her Veterinary Career Technical Education (CTE) instructor, Darla Rodriguez, witnessed that transformation firsthand.

"I watched her grow from a very shy student into an outspoken and smart individual who suddenly blossomed," Rodriguez said.

Discovering a Passion Through Career Education

During her time at OFY, Mya came across a flyer for the Veterinary CTE Pathway. As someone who had always loved animals, the program immediately caught her attention.

"I've always loved animals, so I decided to go for it because it gave me the opportunity to explore a career I'm passionate about while still in school."

The Veterinary CTE Pathway gave Mya the opportunity to explore veterinary medicine through hands-on learning and real-world experiences. Students gain practical knowledge in animal care, veterinary science, anatomy, physiology, animal behavior, and clinical handling techniques while building career-ready skills.

For Mya, the experience transformed a lifelong interest into a clear career goal.

"Through the program, I've been able to understand things like basic animal health, handling techniques, and how to respond to different needs animals may have. This kind of practical experience has made learning much more meaningful and has helped me feel more prepared for working with animals in the future."

Building Confidence Along the Way

As Mya progressed through the program, she developed not only technical skills but also greater confidence in herself and her future.

According to Rodriguez, Mya eagerly embraced every opportunity to continue learning.

"When the opportunity arose to further her career after the CTE pathway by considering the VetMed program, she signed up," Rodriguez said. "She knew it would require more work and time, but she set her mind to it and finished the program."

By the time she graduated from OFY, Mya had gained a deeper understanding of the veterinary profession and felt prepared to pursue the next step in her education.

"Being part of this program has allowed me to explore my interest in veterinary medicine in a more meaningful way and has helped me understand what it takes to pursue this career path. This program has made a difference for students like me who were figuring out their direction in life. The support, guidance, and hands-on learning opportunities have been very valuable to me, and I truly appreciate being able to be part of it."

Looking Ahead

Today, Mya has completed her first year at California State University, San Bernardino, where she is majoring in biology. Earlier this year, she also earned her Veterinary Assistant certification, building on the knowledge and experience she first gained through OFY's Veterinary CTE Pathway.

She plans to continue gaining experience in an animal hospital while working toward her long-term goal of becoming a veterinarian. One day, she hopes to open her own veterinary clinic and dedicate her career to improving the lives of animals.

For Mya, finding the right school meant more than earning a high school diploma—it gave her the confidence to pursue a future she's passionate about.

At Options For Youth, students are empowered to discover their strengths, explore career pathways, and create a future that's uniquely their own. Mya's story is just one example of what's possible when students find the right fit.
