Redefining Disability: How Ashlee Palacios Turned Her Challenges into Strength

The end of high school often brings a rush of emotions—pride, excitement, and a deep sense of relief. For Ashlee Palacios, a graduate representing the Vermont Center, graduation marks more than the end of late-night study sessions and anxious waits for phone calls from teachers. It’s a celebration of strength, growth, and self-discovery.

“We did it – and we did it together!”

Ashlee’s journey with Options For Youth began nearly three years ago. Like many students, she struggled to find a learning environment where she felt supported. Diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability and placed on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), she often found herself having to work twice as hard just to be heard, understood, and taken seriously.

But at OFY, everything changed.

“I never viewed it as a ‘disability.’ Instead, it was a part of my story that motivated me to push through obstacles and strive for success.”

Through the support of staff like Ms. Nadia and Ms. Suzanne, Ashlee learned the power of advocacy—of asking for help and believing in her own voice. She discovered not just academic growth, but the confidence to take on the world.

Ashlee took the stage to share her inspiring journey of perseverance, self-advocacy, and strength.

And take it on, she did.

Ashlee didn’t just complete her high school requirements—she made the most of every opportunity OFY offered. From exploring colleges on the NorCal Tour to competing in an eSports tournament in Arizona, to traveling all the way to Ireland, she found joy in adventure and a new passion for both video games and travel.

“These experiences helped me discover who I am and what I love.”

Ashlee’s speech was also filled with heartfelt gratitude. She gave shoutouts to nearly every staff member at the Vermont Center for their support, patience, and belief in her potential—especially when math got tough or college applications felt overwhelming.

And of course, she didn’t forget her biggest cheerleaders: her family.

“To my mom, dad, sister, and Angel—thank you for pushing me to reach my dreams. Your belief in me has been my greatest motivation.”

Now, Ashlee is heading to the University of California, Irvine (with a full ride!) —ready to start a new chapter, equipped with everything she’s learned at OFY and a powerful mantra that will continue to guide her:

"Take it one day at a time."

Congratulations, Ashlee—and to the entire Class of 2025. Her story is a reminder that a learning disability does not define your limits—it defines your strength. With determination, support, and the right environment, every student has the potential to thrive.
